Various Types of Caps

There are multiple types of chimney caps that we offer through our repair and replacement service. Our Chimney Caps are made with the utmost quality, and we stand by our in-town fabrication shop and warranty against all manufacturer defects. (This does not include damages which may be cause from wind or other elements).

All our chimney caps are custom fit to your chimney to ensure the optimal protection and weather seal. Custom fit chimney caps not only look better but ensure your chimney is protected from the elements from years to come.

Creosote and Ash

Heavily weathered chimney cap will let moisture into your fireplace house or worse combine with creosote and ash and eat away at the liner of your flue or mortar between masonry causing damage. Below is a highly damaged chimney crown with weather cracks which allowed moisture to permeate the chimney flue resulting in the replacement of the entire flue.

Types of Chimney Caps

There are two basic types of Chimney Caps Masonry or masonry flue and metal flue or gas chimneys. Although a gas fire chimney can be a masonry/masonry flue this style is much more expensive to build. More modern chimneys are usually a firebox insert with a metal flue.

Metal flue

The metal flue is typically more of a modern style and used in homes 1980 and newer is usually just a bottom pan style with a round termination cap rather than a full custom top mount product. Older Masonry Chimneys are more expensive to build and just not as common anymore in modern homes

Bottom Pan Style with termination cap.

The basic bottom pan with a termination cap is what we find on most chimneys from builder homes. This is the least expensive option and although does have some benefits it is not aesthetically pleasing as a full chimney cap. They tend to leak around the seam where the flue meets the termination cap. They also do not fit well over the chimney casing and are often screwed in or caulked/glued on.

They also provide a nice shelf for animals to build nests and due to their typical ill fit allow animals to enter through the gap in the pan and chimney stack or casing.

We recommend always replacing this type with a full custom chimney cap.

Although some Caps may be a round clamp style with a concrete crown or terra cotta (permanently affixed caps) these are rarer to find and install but we do repair and install these.

Most common chimney caps are the custom top mounted chimney caps.

We offer an array of chimney cap colors. Although some may be on back order due to shipping issues most are available. Copper and other true metals may also incur an extra charge. Click here for colors

“Top mounted Chimney Caps provide maximum protection for your chimney from the Texas elements such as rain, wind, and ice which will over time cause cracking in the chimney crown, dislodged bottom pans, or even worse masonry damage that could let water inside your chimney. We offer multiple style and metal choices to compliment your home and design preferences. Custom Mount Chimney Caps are also an alternative to decorate a home area matching gable material or adding just the right look for your home. ”

Masonry #1 Cap

A Masonry #1 cap is a traditional flat top cap that covers the entire top of your Chimney. It has specific wire mesh area to dissuade animals from nesting or entering the chimney cap. The cap has a predominant lip that encases the chimney crown or covers the top brick of the chimney and is anchored using small wires within the existing masonry.

  • #2 Chimney Cap

    HBR Chimney

A #2 chimney cap is like the #1 with the exception that the #2 has a pitched and sometimes seamed roof. These are more common up north where snow and other elements may be an issue or if the customer wants a slightly unique design. Pitch can vary from a flat pitch to a very sharp pitch. Please work with your technician to determine what looks the best and will work the best for your chimney

  • Concave Chimney Cap

    Concave Chimney Cap

    HBR Chimney

Concave Chimney Caps, Aspen Style Chimney Caps or Hayes Bale Style (by our competitors) have a slightly slanted pitch and come in both a seamed version and non-seamed version. They have the same mesh as the #1 and #2 that keep the animals out but have a slant to prevent snow and ice buildup. A concave style also comes in a French version or coping version which is the same as a seamed but has a top with coping

  • Stevenson cap

    Stevenson cap

    HBR Chimney

A Stevenson cap is a hybrid between a traditional wood burning masonry chimney cap and one used for gas burning or bottom pan chimneys where a bottom pan hold the flue in place. This type of chimney is not more aesthetically pleasing but it provides more protection from the elements and animals. The termination cap resides within the Stevenson Cap. These caps combine both a bottom pan and termination cap with a protective roof and can have an external mesh applied to prevent animals. A Stevenson cap is not always our first recommendation as the larger top area is a place where animals can build nests. They are slightly more bulky and more expensive for less protection.
